History of SHOC and Organisational Behaviour in Health Care (OBHC) Conferences The first conference The first conference of Organisational Behaviour in Health Care was set up in 1998 by Professor Annabelle Mark at Middlesex University Business School taking as its theme the research agenda for the field of study. It produced an inaugural book: Mark, A.L. and Dopson, S. 1999, Organisational Behaviour in Health Care - the research agenda, 1st edn. Macmillan Business, Basingstoke.
Subsequent conferences There followed a series of biennial conferences with associated publications.

The creation of the Society In 2004 to ensure the future of OBHC and maintain its purpose the learned society The Society for the study of Organising for Healthcare using the acronym SHOC was established. The Society's goals are:
- the promotion of excellence and encouragement of advancement in the organisation of healthcare through research, education and service to the community
- to support and encourage the advancement through collaboration and when appropriate representative discussions and advice to governments and other communities at both political and administrative levels nationally and internationally
- to develop and disseminate theory and practice in organising healthcare through the provision of conferences seminars and associated publications both nationally and internationally
- to comment on national needs and encourage international co-operation in the development and practise of organising for healthcare
- to enhance the organisation of healthcare through the recognition and celebration of outstanding contributions
- in pursuit of the above to bring together such people and resources as are needed to create sustain and develop the society to achieve its purpose.
The Society is a member of the Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences which represents 44 learned societies (and, in total 50,000 social scientists) and 359 individual academicians in the United Kingdom.
